Former president John Mahama says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is “deeply disappointed” in the Supreme Court’s judgement on Thursday.
The Supreme Court of Ghana on Thursday, June 25, dismissed two suits that were seeking to allow for the Electoral Commission to use the existing voter identification card and birth certificates as part of national identity verification documents for the upcoming voter registration exercise.
The seven-member panel of the Supreme Court dismissed the case by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which wanted an order for the use of the existing voter ID card and one Mark Takyi-Benson, who wanted the use of a birth certificate as source documents for eligibility to register as a voter.
Hours after the verdict, the flagbearer of the NDC has described the party’s position regarding the verdict as “deeply disappointed”
“We’re deeply disappointed and strongly disagree with the court over this outcome and indeed has thrown the whole country into a state of confusion. Our legal team is examining this decision even as we await the full reasons for this summary,” he said.
But the former president is optimistic that his party will see victory in the upcoming elections.
“With or without a new register the NDC shall still win the election,” he said.
