Report: Bawumia Leads in New Poll as Preferred NPP Candidate for 2028 Elections

While the 2028 elections are still years away, this poll offers an early glimpse into the evolving political landscape of the NPP. It also indicates the importance of party unity, strategic alliances, and issue-based campaigns in determining who ultimately emerges as the flagbearer of the NPP.

A recent poll conducted by Global Info Analytics has placed Former Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, as the frontrunner to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana’s 2028 general elections. According to the survey results, Bawumia garnered 48.1% of the total polls, positioning him as the most preferred candidate among party supporters and the general electorate.

The poll also revealed that Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent businessman and Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, secured the second spot with 25.1% support. Agyapong, who gained significant traction during the NPP’s 2023 presidential primaries, remains a key figure in the party’s future leadership conversations.

In third place is Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana’s Former Minister of Education in the erstwhile government, who received 12.5% of the support. The Bosomtwe legislator’s performance in the former government, particularly in the education sector, has likely contributed to his growing appeal within the party.

Kwabena Agyapong, a former NPP General Secretary, secured 7.2% of the votes. Despite his previous leadership experience within the party, his numbers indicate that he still has significant ground to cover if he intends to mount a serious challenge in the future.

Bryan Acheampong, the Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, came fifth on the list out the list with 4.1% support, while former Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh came last with 3% support. Acheampong and Addai-Nimoh’s relatively lower numbers suggest they have a lesser presence in the minds of voters compared to the other contenders.

According to Global Info Analytics, this poll relied on a mixed-mode approach using a sample size of 8,437 respondents. The poll had a confidence level of 99% and a margin of error of ±1.38%. Interviews were conducted between 25th March and 1st April 2025, providing a reliable snapshot of the current political preferences within the NPP.

The results of the poll are an indication that the former flagbearer of the NPP, Bawumia, continues to maintain a strong grip on the party’s base, a position further solidified by his visibility in national governance as a Former Vice President, and the just-ended campaign during the 2024 general elections.

However, Kennedy Agyapong’s support suggests that he remains a formidable force, particularly among grassroots supporters who appreciate his direct communication style, business acumen, and possibly his deep pockets.

Dr. Adutwum’s showing in third place reflects the increasing relevance of technocrats in Ghanaian politics. His performance in the education sector which earned him accolades, may invariably position him as a viable alternative for voters looking for policy-driven leadership.

Meanwhile, Kwabena Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Francis Addai-Nimo’s relatively lower numbers indicate that they may need to expand their appeal to remain competitive should they decide to run for the flagbearer race.

While the 2028 elections are still years away, this poll offers an early glimpse into the evolving political landscape of the NPP.
