Petitioner Asks President Mahama to Dissolve Committee Probing Chief Justice’s Removal

Mr. Kumi, a former NPP Parliamentary aspirant for Adenta, alleges in his petition that Thaddeus Sory, a lawyer representing one of the petitioners, was seen on May 15, 2025, having dinner with some members on the CJ’s committee, where they discussed matters related to the process to remove Justice Torkornoo.

Opposition party member, Alfred Ababio Kumi, is reported to have petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the committee investigating the petitions against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Those named in the petition include Justice Gabriel Pwamang, Chairman of the committee probing petitions against the Chief Justice. Another member of Pwamang’s committee, Justice Aseidu Adibu, is also named, as well as Justice Yonny Kulendi, a Supreme Court judge.

The petitioner alleges the meeting happened at the Santoku Restaurant, located at Villagio, Airport Residential Area, on the evening of the same day the committee started its hearings into petitions against Justice Torkornoo.

“The strange meeting of the four persons who are keenly interested in and have played, and indeed continue to play, critical roles initiated in the processes for the removal of the Chief Justice excited the curiosity of some persons in the restaurant. Indeed, they were overheard discussing matters relating to the petition,” the petition read in part. Respectfully, the record of the four Justices Pwamang, Kulendi, Asiedu, and lawyer Thaddeus Sory’s presence at the restaurant and meeting can easily be verified and confirmed,” portions of his petition quoted by pro-opposition media outlet Asaase Radio read.

“The above development is of grave worry as proceedings for the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana are a solemn process and should not lend itself to manipulation by any person or authority. The meeting between Justices Pwamang, Kulendi, and Asiedu with Thaddeus Sory clearly has destroyed the integrity of the process and reduced public confidence in the process so far.”

Meanwhile, Thaddeus Sory has denied the claims. Writing on his Facebook on Monday, he said: “It is a monstrous lie. No such meeting took place. It is very easy to fact check that. We know those who get justice through negotiation.”

Kumi’s petition has not been made public, neither has the government announced receipt of the said petition, given the public interest in matters concerning the Chief Justice.
