This announcement was made by Justin Frimpong Koduah, the NPP General Secretary, at the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, 17th June 2025.

In Brief
  • The NPP will hold its presidential primaries for the 2028 elections on January 31, 2026, following a proposal from its constitution review committee.
  • Key party figures like Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Bryan Acheampong have shown interest in running, with more contenders expected once nominations open.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it intends to hold its primaries for the election of a party flagbearer for the 2028 elections on January 31, 2026.

This announcement was made by Justin Frimpong Koduah, the NPP General Secretary, at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, 17th June 2025.

This also comes on the back of a proposal adopted constitution review committee of the party’s National Council.

“The date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries. Because there is going to be a proposal or motion for amendment of our constitution, a planning committee has been put in place,” Koduah said.

Meanwhile, some party members have already shown high interest in running for president on the NPP ticket. These include the former flagbearer in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin-Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong. The number of flagbearer aspirants may increase once the party announces the official timeline for nominations.
