Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture and four‑term member of parliament for Abetifi, has officially signalled his intent to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position for the upcoming 2026 presidential primaries.
The MP made his intent formally known after his meeting with the Moderator and members of the General Council of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to reaffirm his spiritual roots.
“A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations, but to do that, as a product of the church, it will be a disappointment per my tradition, if the moderator of the church hears it for the first time on the radio,” he said.

He also indicated that the decision to contest the flagbearership stems from the favourable report he received from the exploratory committee he assembled in late May. The report, according to him, was indicative of the need for the NPP party to find a new leadership.
What does this mean for you?
Bryan Acheampong’s decision, based on advice from his team that the NPP needs a new direction, means:
Even top party members like Bryan believe the current leadership style isn’t working, and if things continue this way, the party could struggle in future elections.
With Acheampong joining the race, it’s clear the NPP will have a tough, competitive contest ahead. That could either revive the party with new ideas — or deepen internal division, depending on how it’s handled.
For the ordinary citizen, it means watching new potential leaders emerge. Bryan, being a former Agric Minister and businessman, could bring different priorities if he ever leads — likely focused on food security, youth jobs, and national security, things that directly affect everyday lives.
