The University of Ghana has issued an alert to its student community to adhere to COVID-19 preventive measures following the confirmation of cases within the university community.
A statement by the University’s Health Directorate said a few cases had been detected, and confirmed.
“The Health Services Directorate has also reactivated its COVID-19 Response Protocols, including screening measures at health facilities while it monitors the situation closely for regular updates,” the statement said.

It is not immediately clear if the same variant was detected by authorities at the University of Ghana. The Ghana Health Service has also not issued an alert of a possible public spread.
In the meantime, the preventive measures as outlined in the University of Ghana's statement can be also be adhered to by the public.
Has COVID-19 Resurged?
Elsewhere in the world, there is a new strain of COVID-19 spreading after the pandemic was declared over in 2023.
The variant, NB.1.8.1, has been identified as the cause of COVID-19 resurgence in China and several other Asian countries. Experts in Europe are predicting a possible increase in cases there, CNN reported last week.
In the US, the variant was detected in early June, reports said. “It was estimated to account for up to 37%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” one report said.
Additionally, in a May report, the World Health Organization rated the public health risk posed by the variant as “low at the global level.” It also advised that the currently approved COVID-19 vaccines are “expected to remain effective to this variant against symptomatic and severe disease.”
