Ablekumah North Elections: NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn Wins Seat After Months of Impasse

The declaration of a winner for that constituency brings an end to months of impasse over the collation of the results.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Ablekumah North Constituency Ewurabena Aubynn has emerged winner following a highly anticipated rerun of elections in 19 polling stations across the constituency.

The declaration of a winner for the constituency brings an end to months of impasse over the collation of the 2024 parliamentary results. Until now, the constituency had no representation in Parliament due to prolonged disputes over last year’s results.

After Friday’s rerun, NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34,090 votes while NPP’s Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes. The NDC candidate won by a narrow margin of 209 votes.

The elections were, however, marred by a great deal of violence. A number of journalists were assaulted, causing the Ghana Police to interdict one of its officers.

There were also widespread reports of thugs and political party supporters causing mayhem and attacking known public figures like former MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and the deputy national youth organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah.

The win for the NDC will now rack up its numbers in Parliament to 184 seats, while the NPP’s number decreases to 87 due to the death of the Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi.

The MP’s death will also trigger a by-election in the area. Per the 1992 Constitution, once the Clerk of Parliament notifies the EC within seven days of the vacancy, a by-election must be held within 30 days.
