Unpacking the 5000KM ‘The Big Push’ Roads Region by Region

In this post, we look at where the money is going, which regions benefit most, and whether this renewed focus will finally translate into smoother, safer, and more efficient travel. Here’s a breakdown of the key road allocations in the 2025 mid-year budget under the Big Push Agenda - region by region.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the Big Push Agenda during the mid-year budget review, with road infrastructure taking centre stage.

The announcement came with significant allocations and re-prioritizations aimed at addressing long-standing transportation bottlenecks in the country. According to the minister, the NDC government is committed to rehabilitating about 5000 KM of roads across some 116 constituencies in three years.

“The government has identified 166 constituencies in dire need of road infrastructure. In response, we have programmed to rehabilitate 10km of roads annually in each of these constituencies. This translates to about 5,000km of roads to be reconstructed in these 166 constituencies in dire need of road infrastructure over the next 3 years,” he told Parliament.

Recently, Parliament approved that all oil revenues and mineral royalties allocated to the national budget be channelled directly into ‘The Big Push’ agenda. That decision, which would later materialise in the form of a GH¢13.8 billion commitment, has been earmarked for road infrastructure.

But beyond the headline numbers lies a more complex picture, where the money is going, which regions benefit most, and whether this renewed focus will finally translate into smoother, safer, and more efficient travel.
