Ghana’s Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has been removed from office with immediate effect.
This was made in an announcement by the Presidency hours after the committee probing three petitions against her removal submitted its first report on one of the petitions by Daniel Ofori.
“After considering the petition and the evidence, the Committee found that the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146 (1) had been established and recommended her removal from office,” the statement said.
The full content of the committee’s report has not been made public. Justice Torkornoo is the first Chief Justice to be removed from office since Sir Arku Korsah was removed in 1963 under the Nkrumah regime. She was also the third female appointed Chief Justice of Ghana.
