The 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has been hit with a scandalous exposé documentary revealing examination practices that have gone unchecked in Ghana.
The 17 minutes documentary, which is an initiative of JoyNews Hotline Investigation led by GH Probe’s Francisca Enchil, exposed examination malpractice among Junior High School students writing their final papers for secondary school placements, and a syndicate of Ghana Education Service officials and teachers who abetted cheating in exchange for monetary benefits. Scenes from the secretly filmed footages at two examination centres (Derby Avenue RC Basic School and St. George’s Anglican Basic School), showed invigilators demanding “tokens” in order to reduce strict invigilation protocols to enable the candidates to cheat with ease.

The B.E.C.E candidates were required to bribe supervisors, who demanded cash to facilitate exam malpractices, including alerting invigilators to pause dictating answers when National Security and WAEC officials inspected the centers. The students were also permitted to bring unauthorized materials, such as pre-solved answers and mobile phones, into the exam halls.
The documentary has sparked national outrage, with the Ghana Education Service warning that culprits involved in the inappropriate scheme during the Basic Certificate Examination will face dismissal if caught.
