President John Mahama has submitted the name of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to be considered as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, stating that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s name has been forwarded to the Council of State in accordance with Article 144 (1) of the Constitution.
A statement by the Presidency described him as a jurist who has “served with diligence and integrity” and made “invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence.”
Before this nomination, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie worked in an acting capacity as Chief Justice following the suspension of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Justice Torkornoo was removed on September 1, 2025.
Profile of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie
Born on December 26, 1956, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie studied law at the University of Ghana and later at the Ghana Law School, where he was called to the Bar in 1983.
He has served in the judiciary as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi, a High Court Judge at Duayaw Nkwanta, and later as an Appeals Court Judge before his elevation to the Supreme Court bench.
