US Reverses Visa Restrictions on Ghana

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that the US government has reversed visa restrictions it imposed on Ghana earlier this year.

This means that Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges.

“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker at a bilateral meeting earlier today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly,” the minister wrote on X on Friday.

The US embassy in Ghana has also confirmed this development.

“The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that the maximum validity periods for all categories of non-immigrant visas for Ghanaians have been restored to their previous lengths. The maximum validity allowed for the B1/B2 visitor visa is again five years, multiple entry. The maximum validity for the F1 student visa is again four years, multiple entry,” it wrote in a statement.

The visa restrictions, now removed, were imposed in July, in line with the Trump administration’s non-immigrant visa policy. Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ethiopia were among the African countries affected, and the new conditions meant that citizens of the countries were eligible for single-entry visas valid for only three months.

Ghanaians on social media who reacted to the new developments suggested that it might have been the reason why Ghana accepted the US deportees.

Ablakwa created a problem and later solved it by signing a deal with the US government which forces us to take deportees (who aren’t Ghanaians) from the US,” one user wrote on X.

I guess this was the deal that was made in exchange for receiving the deportees Cold move Mahani and Ablakwa..cold move,” another wrote.
