Former New Patriotic Party founding member, Alan Kyerematen, has officially converted his political movement, the Movement for Change, into a fully-fledged political party called the United Party (UP).
On Tuesday, October 16, the Former Trade and Industry Minister and his new party members announced the change during a launch ceremony at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.
The rebranding, according to Mr Kyeremanten, marks a turning point in his political journey as he seeks to establish the UP as a credible third force ahead of the 2028 general elections and beyond.

“The vision of the United Party is to make Ghana the economic powerhouse of Africa by 2040,” Alan Kyerematen, Leader, United Party.
Party leaders say the new name reflects a message of national unity, inclusiveness, and development-oriented leadership, one that aims to move Ghana past entrenched partisan divisions – a name inspired by Abrefa Busia’s United Party.
“We present to you the United Party Plus, which we may also call UP 2.0. This party has come to resurrect the old bones of those who knew and believed in the original UP tradition,” Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Madina, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface said.
He explained that the new United Party would serve as a unifying platform for Ghanaians who feel left out by the dominance of the two major political parties.
“Every seed germinates only after it rots. We have come from different walks of life to rebuild a political force rooted in integrity, service, and patriotism,” Alhaji Boniface noted.
Mr. Kyerematen, who resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2023 after years of service, founded the Movement for Change on the promise of restoring hope and accountability in governance.
With the Electoral Commission’s approval on October 3, the movement for change has now transitioned into a registered political party known as the United Party (UP) ready to compete on the national stage.
