State Burial for Former First Lady Set for Nov 28

The funeral will take place at Independence Square in Accra, the Presidency said in a statement

The government has announced that it would hold a state funeral for former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings on Friday, November 28, 2025.

The funeral will take place at Independence Square in Accra, the Presidency said in a statement.

“The state funeral is in recognition of Mrs Rawlings’ invaluable contributions to the advancement of rights of women and children in Ghana and national development,” the statement added.

The former First Lady passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the age of 76. She was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Nana Konadu, a very influential woman in Ghana’s political history, was born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Central Region.

She served as First Lady of Ghana during her husband Jerry John Rawlings’s years in power (1981 – 2001) and was a prominent advocate for women’s rights, founding the “31st December Women’s Movement.
