The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had temporarily suspended its ongoing military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra after a stampede led to the deaths of six people on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The stampede occurred after thousands of potential recruits thronged into the stadium, creating a situation that not just resulted in fatalities, but also caused injuries to others.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates ahead of scheduled screening at about 0620 hours,” the military said in a statement the first time news of the incident broke.
According to officials, at least 28 people were rushed to the hospital for treatment following the incident.
“Those who are critical and in ICU are five. We have 12 who are fairly critical, the rest are stable,” General Evelyn Vivian Abraham Kwabea, a military official, told reporters at the 37 Military Hospital.
In the subsequent announcement of the suspension of the exercise, GAF stated that a body of enquiry had been formed to investigate the incident.
