Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday confirmed Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the nation’s new Chief Justice, days after a parliamentary committee concluded its vetting process.
The approval followed a majority recommendation from Parliament’s Appointments Committee, which vetted the longtime Supreme Court justice earlier in the week.
“The Committee therefore recommends to the House, by majority decision, the adoption of the report of the approval of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana,” the committee’s chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, told lawmakers as he presented the findings on the floor.

Ahiafor said the committee’s endorsement came after “careful deliberation” on Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s qualifications and judicial record.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served on Ghana’s Supreme Court for over a decade, succeeds Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who retired earlier this year amid controversy. His confirmation cements his position as the head of Ghana’s judiciary at a time of heightened national attention on judicial independence and governance.
