President John Mahama has stated that his government is not in a rush to appoint substantive ministers for Environment and Defence, saying that those positions will be filled in 2026.
Addressing a meeting with Muslim leaders at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, November 25, the President indicated that rumours about imminent appointments were unfounded.
“I can see people speculating he is going to appoint new Defence minister, new Environment minister. We are not in a hurry,” he said.
“I’ll do those appointments next year after the holiday – the Christmas and the New Year. We’ll fill those positions, and so those speculating about somebody going to be appointed tomorrow and all that, just take your time, go and enjoy Christmas and then after Christmas we will take a decision on those ones,” Mahama added.
Among those rumored to be likely appointed as the substantive Defence minister is Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the MP for Korle Klottey, and daughter of Ghana’s late former president Jerry John Rawlings.
Background
Former Defence and Environment ministers, Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, were among those who lost their lives in the tragic August 6 helicopter crash.
