Black Sherif has thrown his weight behind female artiste Wendy Shay in the ongoing conversations surrounding the Artiste of the Year category at the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), describing her as a deserving contender who has been largely overlooked.
In a recent interview with Kafui Dey on his YouTube podcast, Black Sherif expressed clear dissatisfaction with the manner in which public discourse and industry commentary have side lined Wendy Shay despite her consistent output and impact over the period under review.
“I don’t like how people are not mentioning Wendy Shay’s name for the Artiste of the Year. I feel like she is really eligible for this year as well,” he said, urging the awards board to do more to empower women in the music industry.

Black Sherif also drew attention to perceived gender imbalances in the nominations. He specifically pointed to the omission of Cina Soul’s album, “Did I Lie,” released in September 2025, from the Album of the Year category.
“An album like Cina’s, which was released last year, should not be missing in the Album of the Year category. I don’t know how they missed it. They actually missed so many albums in that category,” he added.
Black Sherif’s comments in the interview which was released on Friday April 3, 2026 have since sparked fresh waves of discussion around the TGMA nominations. Many have applauded his outspoken stance, describing it as a commendable display of solidarity, particularly for his willingness to elevate his female colleagues.
