On Africa Day, May 25, 2026, President John Mahama launched Ghana’s new E-visa platform, as the country moves towards modern ways to eliminate travel barriers for foreigners entering the country.

Launched in Accra, the initiative additionally allows free access for all nationals of African descent, in line with the government’s previous announcement of a free visa policy.

Foreign nationals who now want to travel to Ghana would have to apply by submitting visa requests online and wait for a decision within 48 hours. For non-African foreign nationals, the visa fee has been set at $260.

According to President Mahama, the digital platform “affirms Ghana’s readiness to embrace a new era of mobility, connectivity, innovation and economic opportunity.

“Today marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey towards building a modern, efficient and globally connected state,” he said.

However the President noted that while financial barriers for Africans who wish to travel to Ghana have been removed, the country would not compromise national security, as the e-visa system was fully integrated into the Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record (API-PNR) architecture linked to international crime and watchlist databases.

“Every entry into Ghana will remain subject to stringent security screening and established immigration protocols,” he added.

President Mahama also announced plans to extend the E-visa platform to cover work and residence permits, directing the Ministries for the Interior, Foreign Affairs and Transport, the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) to automate the processes to reduce delays and improve the ease of doing business.
