Ghanaian art gallery Deadly Prey has earned international recognition after one of its hand-painted film posters was featured on the popular American satire show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
In a recent episode, host John Oliver highlighted the unique artwork, which was commissioned by HBO as part of its annual Emmy voting window advertising campaign. The network approached Deadly Prey Gallery and gave Ghanaian artist C.A. Wisely minimal creative direction.
C.A. Wisely responded with a bold, fever-dream striking hand-painted poster promoting Oliver’s fictional soap opera segment. The host praised the poster’s distinctive style and raw artistic quality, which he said is rarely seen in contemporary digital advertising.

Deadly Prey Gallery is known for reviving the tradition of hand-painted posters of Hollywood blockbusters that once adorned cinema shacks across Accra during the 1990s VHS era. These vibrant, dramatic works blended horror-tinged menace, explosive action, and bold typography that practically leapt off the wall, giving audiences a vivid preview of the films being screened.
The limited-edition poster featured on the show is now available for purchase at HangJohnOliver.com, with proceeds benefiting Deadly Prey Gallery and various charities in Ghana through a partnership with the Global Giving Foundation.
