Shirley Frimpong-Manso, CEO of Sparrow Studios, and Peter Sedufia, CEO of OldFilm Productions, have announced three collaborative films under the banner “The 70 Slate: A Cinematic Celebration of Ghana at 70.”
The project was officially unveiled at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. It is designed to honour Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.

The films under the 70 slate includes “The Return of Makunse,” scheduled for release in December 2026; “Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green,” set to premiere in July 2027 and a modern remake of “I Told You So,” which will close the series in December 2027.
At the launch, Peter Sedufia explained that the collaboration began when he approached Shirley Frimpong-Manso last year with the aim of creating films rooted in Ghanaian stories that spans the past, present and modern times.
“I approached Shirley because I believed that bringing our two creative strengths together could create something truly special. We wanted to tell Ghanaian stories from different perspectives, celebrate where we have come from, reflect on where we are today and imagine where we are going,” he said.
Shirley Frimpong-Manso says the project seeks to encourage Ghanaians to reflect on their history, inspire pride and unity, examine how society has evolved, and reconnect audiences with the cinema experience.
“We want this project to encourage Ghanaians to reflect on our history and identity, inspire pride and unity, and examine who we have become as a society. We also want to reconnect audiences with the cinema experience and take these Ghanaian stories beyond our borders.” She said. “Global distribution and stronger engagement with Ghanaians in the diaspora are very important to us,” Shirley Frimpong-Manso said.
At a time when the Ghanaian film industry has faced criticism over its direction, the project aims to help revive local cinema culture. Spearheaded by two award-winning filmmakers, the three films will address stories from the past, present and future through different concepts.
“The Return of Makunse” explores migration and the difficult realities behind the search for a better life abroad.
The second film on the slate, “Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green” takes a cinematic focus into the final 24 hours before the Big Six declared Ghana’s independence on 6th March 1957.
The remake of Bob Cole’s “I Told You So” will give the classic Ghanaian comedy a contemporary interpretation, introducing a vintage piece of Ghanaian entertainment history to new audiences.
The films are produced by Shirley Frimpong-Manso, Peter Sedufia, Araba Sedufia and Ken Attoh are producers.
Actors already attached to the projects include Fella Makafui, Augustine Abbey (Idi Koko), Kojo Boakye, Lydia Forson, Joselyn Dumas, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, Adjetey Anang, Kwame Dzokoto, Priscilla Ahiable, Araba Sedufia and Frederick Yeboah.
“The 70 Slate” is supported by the National Film Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President. Brand partners for the project include Nestlé Ghana, GLICO and Silverbird Cinemas.
