The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will introduce a new series of Ghana cedi notes, known as the Heritage Series, as part of efforts to modernise the currency and improve its security and durability.
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced on Thursday at the end of the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
The new banknotes will feature enhanced security measures, and designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage, and culture.
According to Dr Asiama, the current designs have been in circulation for more than two decades, making it necessary to modernise the banknotes as technology and security standards evolve.
“The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and Ghana’s aspirations,” he said.
The Governor explained that the Heritage Series is expected to strengthen protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and support more efficient and cost-effective currency management.
He added that the new series would also provide an opportunity to honour Ghanaian national heroes and showcase elements of the country’s heritage and identity.
When asked how much this initiative rollout will cost, Dr. Asiama said:”We have budgeted for it, we have everything documented, and it will be reflected in our 2026 audited accounts.”
Existing banknotes to remain legal tender
The BoG clarified that the introduction of the Heritage Series would not result in the withdrawal of the existing cedi notes.
He said the new notes would circulate alongside the existing ones, which would still remain legal tender.
“There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or to withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the new Heritage Series,” he said.
