The government has introduced a contra-flow arrangement for Ayalolo buses on four major routes into Accra’s Central Business District to help ease congestion during peak hours.
The initiative covers the Amasaman–Accra, Pokuase–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra corridors, which experience heavy traffic during the morning and evening rush hours.
“These corridors have been identified for priority intervention because of the significant volumes of commuters travelling to and from the Central Business District during peak periods,” a statement from the Local Government Ministry shared by Government Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said.

Under the arrangement, Ayalolo buses will be prioritised for longer-distance journeys into the Central Business District, while commercial passenger vehicles, including trotros, will continue to serve commuters travelling shorter distances along the various corridors.
The government says the arrangement is intended to improve public transport efficiency by allowing the high-capacity Ayalolo buses to transport larger numbers of passengers travelling into central Accra.
“The Aayalolo buses take 80 people at once so when you take 80 people of those who are going directly to Accra Central from Madina, it means that you are freeing space for the trotros to be able to pick the short distances and move faster so they may actually get more volumes that way than they are getting now,” Local Government minister, Mahama Ayariga explained.
