Nigerian actor and thespian Pete Edochie has called on President John Dramani Mahama to invest in and support Ghana’s film industry, warning that without intervention the sector risks becoming obsolete.

Pete Edochie made the appeal during his visit to Ghana as part of activities for his “Pete Edochie Legacy Project,” which includes events in Accra celebrating his career and contributions to African cinema.

He argued that a direct commitment from government could revitalize the industry, citing Mahama’s reputation as a progressive leader.

“I believe that if you make a direct appeal to him support us, challenge us with this amount of money, let’s go and shoot films, give us so and so time …we shall return the money. I believe that he would like to do that. He is a very progressive person,” Edochie said.

The veteran actor emphasized that his plea was a genuine call to action which he believes will be met with a response from the presidency.

“If I say, your excellency, sir, don’t let our industry die in Ghana, he will respond. He has heard it,” he added.

Pete Edochie also praised Mahama’s efforts to open Ghana’s borders to Africans in the diaspora, describing him as the first African president to extend such an invitation.

“The way he opened his arms to our brothers in America and others in the diaspora to come over here and settle down. People who have been victimized all these years, Ghana is there for you. And I think he is the first African president to do that,” he noted.

He expressed confidence that the same open‑mindedness could be applied to strengthening Ghana’s film sector.

Pete Edochie’s remarks come at a time when the industry is grappling with a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape. The rise of YouTube, short‑form video, and other digital platforms has disrupted traditional models while simultaneously creating new opportunities for filmmakers and emerging talents to reach audiences and sustain their craft.
