The interment of Ghanaian screen icon Grace Naa Kwarley Nortey has been scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the forecourt of the State House, followed by a private memorial service.
According to details shared by her family, funeral rites will continue on Sunday, November 1, with a Thanksgiving Service at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Osu.
Grace Nortey, born on February 1, 1937, died on August 26, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. She is survived by her husband, Archibald Nortey, and five children, including actress Sheila Nortey.
In recent years, she had faced health challenges, including acute eye problems, which led her to step back from acting.
Widely recognized during Ghana’s golden era of film and television, Grace Nortey earned acclaim for her commanding portrayals of matriarchs who confronted gender-based violence and class discrimination.
Her performances were noted for their eloquence and intensity, qualities that made her one of the most respected figures in Ghanaian cinema.
Her career began on stage before she transitioned to film and television. In the 1970s, she also hosted “Nyɛ Awo koshie” a pioneering radio program on Radio One that sought to empower Ga women.
Grace Nortey’s filmography reflects her versatility and longevity in the industry. Her credits include Nana Akoto (1985), Juju (1986), The Other Side of the Rich (1992), Escape to Love (1996), Matters of the Heart, Ties That Bind (2011), Sinking Sands (2011), and Beasts of No Nation (2015).
