Mahama Pardons 863 Prisoners to Mark Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary

President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted prisoners in commemoration of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Government Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Monday, October 5, 2026.

“The grant of pardon is made in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, marking this significant milestone in the nation’s history with an act of mercy and national reflection,” the statement said.

Relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s decision.

Of the 863 beneficiaries, 819 first offenders have been granted outright release, while 13 convicted persons aged 70 and above have also been released.

Six seriously ill prisoners have equally been granted outright release.

Meanwhile, the sentences of 11 persons on death row have been commuted to life imprisonment, while six life sentences have been reduced to 20-year definite sentences.

Two persons have been granted outright release under special recommendations, while three others received pardons following petitions.

Another three beneficiaries fall under other categories.
