Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday. He took the name Pope Leo XIV, and is the first pope from the United States.
He defied the conventional wisdom before the conclave that any American would be a long shot to become pontiff.
The 69-year-old is originally from Chicago. He was head of the dicastery responsible for the appointment of bishops and the archbishop emeritus of Chiclayo, Peru.
