Shirley Frimpong-Manso Takes ‘Honeymoon Hotel’ to the Stage

The play, scheduled to run on the National Theatre stage from June 20 to 22, 2025, is originally written by playwright Stephen Yaw Oppong and will be produced by Africa Arts Network, the team behind acclaimed theatrical productions such as In the Chest of a Woman and You Play Me, I Play You.

Ghana’s finest female filmmaker and director, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, is set to direct her first-ever stage play titled “Honeymoon Hotel.”

The play, scheduled to run on the National Theatre stage from June 20 to 22, 2025, is originally written by playwright Stephen Yaw Oppong and will be produced by Africa Arts Network, the team behind acclaimed theatrical productions such as In the Chest of a Woman and You Play Me, I Play You.

In a recent interview, Frimpong-Manso discussed her foray into stage directing, touching on the unfiltered feel and real-time pacing that makes stage plays different from filmmaking.

“Theatre is raw, immediate, and alive in a way that is different from film. I’m incredibly excited to be making my theatre debut,” She said. “It’s been such a thrilling experience diving into rehearsals, working closely with this amazing cast, and rediscovering storytelling in its purest form.”

“Honeymoon Hotel” is a romantic play that tells the story of a lavish hotel established for couples looking to consummate their affection. But the plot unfurls hidden secrets of both guests and hotel staff, bringing to light complexities in the form of deceit, commitment and love, wrapped in humour and comedy. The play will feature a cast of screen actors such as Joselyn Dumas, James Gardiner, Ama K. Abebrese, Godwin Namboh, Andrew Tandoh-Adote, Gadede Segbefia, David Dontoh, Jasmine Baroudi, and Amanda Jissih, amongst other stage-play actors.

Shirley Frimpong-Manso is a Ghanaian film director, producer, and screenwriter known for her distinct films. She has gained recognition for her films that often explore love, relationships, and social issues, with strong female characters and perspectives. She is also the founder of Sparrow Productions, a film production company based in Ghana that churned out popular movies including “The Perfect Picture” (2009), “A Sting in a Tale” (2009),  “Scorned” (2012), “Contract” (2012) and “Potato Potahto” (2017).
