Akwatia By-Election Set for September 2

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will hold a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency on September 2, 3035. This comes after the death of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for the area.

In a statement on Wednesday, the EC noted that nominations had opened and that prospective candidates who wished to contest the election have until August 13, 2025, to submit nomination forms.

“The filing fee for the election is GHC 10,000 per candidate. However, the filing fee for female candidates and Persons with Disability is GHC 7000,” the statement said.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) already appears to have a candidate. At a press conference last Tuesday, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, revealed that after several consultations and meetings by the party’s elders have unanimously approved Solomon Asumadu to contest for the Akwatia seat.

Meanwhile, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is yet to annouce its candidate.
