President John Dramani Mahama is set to meet more than a dozen civil society organisations for an engagement on illegal mining, otherwise known as ‘galamsey.’
A letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and dated September 17, 2025, said the meeting aims to provide a platform for “frank” and “constructive” dialogue between the government and CSOs on the menace of illegal mining.
The Presidency also aims to harness “collective expertise, perspectives, and solutions to address this national challenge.”
The engagement is scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2025.
The Catholic Bishops Conference, Christian Council of Ghana, Office of the Chief Imam, IMANI Ghana, A Rocha Ghana, Ghana Bar Association, Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Star Ghana Foundation, Eco Conscious Citizens, and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), among those invited.
In Ghana, CSOs have been vocal voices and, at times, have put pressure on the government to end the galamsey crisis.
