Wikipedia Unveils Highlife @100 Project to Celebrate a Century of Highlife Music

The Wikimedia Ghana User Group ((WMGH)) has launched the Wikipedia Highlife @ 100 Project to celebrate and enhance the online documentation of Ghanaian Highlife music as it marks its 100th anniversary.

The Highlife genre is a vital part of Ghana’s cultural and sonic foundation, influencing and inspiring other genres over the years. Despite its magnitude in Ghanaian music, Highlife currently lacks proper archives and documentation on its history, pioneers, catalogs, and etymology.

To address this gap, the Wikimedia Ghana User Group WMGH is inviting volunteers, researchers, audiophiles, and historians to collaborate on drafting articles and creating new media content. This effort seeks to flesh out existing highlife-related pieces and document the genre’s scope and progress over the past centuries.

A key component of the project is “The Notable Women in Highlife” campaign, designed to highlight the contributions of female highlife musicians who have been historically underrepresented on Wikipedia. The campaign will feature a series of women-only online editathons scheduled from March 5 to March 31, 2026, with editing sessions convened every Tuesday and Thursday.

in addition to the campaign, the #FindHerHighlife Contest has also been launched, inviting the public to submit names of Ghanaian Highlife artistes, particularly women, who are currently missing from Wikipedia articles. Participants submitting accurate information will be eligible for internet data bundles.

Through the Wikipedia Highlife @ 100 Project, WMG aims to enhance documentation, preserve Ghana’s century-old musical heritage, and make Highlife information more accessible globally.
