Rapper and activist Okyeame Kwame has called for the inclusion of instrumentalists in dedicated categories at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), arguing that their contributions deserve proper recognition as artistes.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz on April 13, 2026, Okyeame Kwame noted that performing artistes often receive most of the credit and awards, while the instrumentalists who bring songs to life are frequently overlooked.

“The music that we make, to be honest, is being curated by producers and live musicians. They do more of the work than we take credit for when we win awards,” he said.

He suggested that the current award categories should be expanded to better reflect the collective effort that goes into live performances and recorded music, rather than honouring only the lead performer.

“Instead of just one award for live musician, there should be one for Saxophonist of the Year, one for Lead Guitarist of the Year, one for Drummer of the Year, and even separate categories for backing vocalists,” he proposed.

The “Killing the Game” hitmaker emphasised the need to acknowledge the musicians responsible for crafting the sounds and rhythms that define Ghanaian music.

“It is very important that we encourage the real musicians who are creating the music for us to shine. They must also be recognised,” he added.

When asked whether he had pushed this agenda during his time as a board member of the awards scheme, Okyeame Kwame admitted he had made the proposal once or twice.

“Yes, once or twice… I think twice,” he said, adding jokingly, “Maybe. I also love live music.”

The discussion later shifted to the highly competitive Artiste of the Year category. Okyeame Kwame confidently stated that he could win the ultimate award again if he released three strong hit songs in a year.

“Oh definitely! There are no doubts. It’s impossible that it won’t happen again. Whatever I say I will do, I do. If I am able to do all the things I am saying I will do in a year and I get three big hits, I am Artiste of the Year. It’s that simple,” he stated.

Citing his academic background, the rapper explained that his qualifications in public relations and marketing give him a strategic edge in crafting award-winning songs.

“Don’t forget that I have an MPhil in Public Relations, a master’s in Marketing Strategy, and I am a co-opted member of the Chartered Marketing Institute of the UK. I know marketing and PR. I can map out my stakeholders effectively. If I do what I am supposed to do, I am Artiste of the Year easily,” he explained.
