Gov’t Rescues 28 Ghanaians Trafficked to Cote d’Ivoire

This development comes a week after a report indicated that as many as 450 Ghanaians were trapped in trafficking camps in Ivory Coast.

Government says it has rescued 28 Ghanaians, mostly young people, who were victims of a human trafficking network in Côte d’Ivoire.

The victims have been repatriated to Ghana following a coordinated cross-border security operation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.

The Ministry further warned that trafficking networks continue to target vulnerable young people with fake job and travel offers. “Ghanaians are hereby advised to be extra vigilant and avoid becoming victims of such trafficking schemes,” it said.

This development comes a week after a report indicated that as many as 450 Ghanaians were trapped in trafficking camps in Côte d’Ivoire after being promised job opportunities abroad.

For now, it is unclear whether there will be further rescues from Côte d’Ivoire. But such incidents of human trafficking are not new. In April last year, Interpol, together with Ghanaian and Ivorian officials, rescued 33 victims of human trafficking, who had been lured through fake job ads online.
