Jamaican conscious reggae artiste Fantan Mojah has died at the age of 49.
The artiste, whose real name is Owen Moncrieffe, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. His death was caused by complications from a heart condition.
Booking agent Vertex, who was close to the singer, shared details of his final days.

“Since he came back from the United States, he was hearty, but over the past week he started to ‘tek down’ and he was admitted to the UHWI. Last night, he was vomiting blood, and that was it. He passed away,” Vertex said.
Fantan Mojah had been managing heart-related health challenges for nearly two years. In 2024, he was hospitalised after suffering breathing difficulties and chest pain. He recovered and returned to performing across Europe by early 2025.
Fantan Mojah made his recording debut in 1997 with the single “When I Rise.” He rose to prominence with his 2005 breakthrough album “Hail the King,” and built a solid career on powerful roots reggae rooted in Rastafari teachings. His music carries messages of social justice, struggle, and hope, as heard on songs like “Corruption,” “Rasta Got Soul,” and “Thanks & Praise.”
In December 2025, he performed in Ghana as a special guest at Stonebwoy’s 10th BHIM Festival at the Accra Sports Stadium. His energetic performance, which included many of his biggest hits, was one of the memorable highlights of the night.
Fantan Mojah is survived by at least five children. Following the news of his passing, tributes have been pouring in from musicians, fans, and colleagues who praised his authenticity and lasting impact on conscious reggae music.
