Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer and former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced the death of his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah.
Asamoah Gyan shared the news on Instagram on Friday, 24 July 2026, in a brief but emotional tribute.
“I’m happy you saw my greatness, Dad. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (Asase Yaa),” Gyan wrote.
George Gyan Baffour Mensah, who was 82, largely avoided the public spotlight. He was, however, widely regarded within football circles as a quiet but consistent source of support throughout his son’s career, from his early days in Ghanaian football to his rise as one of Africa’s most recognisable strikers.
Asamoah Gyan holds the distinction of being Africa’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history, with six goals. He was a central figure in Ghana’s memorable run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and remains the Black Stars’ all-time leading goal scorer.
At club level, Gyan enjoyed a long career across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He played for Udinese in Italy, Rennes in France, Sunderland in England, Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, Shanghai SIPG in China, Kayserispor in Turkey and also had a spell with North East United in India. In Ghana, he represented Liberty Professionals and later Legon Cities.
Asamoah Gyan comes from a family with established sporting connections. His younger brother, Baffour Gyan, is a former Ghana international who also played professional football.
The family has yet to release details of funeral arrangements.
