Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and recognised as Ghana’s tallest man, died at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the early hours of Monday, 27 July 2026. He was 32.
Awuche, who stood at approximately 9 feet 6 inches, was born in Gambaga in the Northern Region. He lived with acromegaly, a rare growth hormone disorder that resulted in continuous growth and gigantism. In an earlier interview with BBC Africa, he stated that he continued to increase in height every three to four months.
In the period leading up to his death, Awuche, who suffered severe back pain, spinal curvature, swollen tongue, breathing problems and mobility difficulties, was referred from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for specialised treatment after his condition deteriorated.
Medical staff at the Tamale Teaching Hospital initially recommended amputation of his left leg after an infection caused part of the limb to decay. A subsequent reassessment by doctors later reversed that recommendation.
Faced with mounting medical costs, Awuche publicly appealed for financial assistance, stating that he was unable to access the required care due to financial constraints. The appeal attracted national attention and led businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama to pledge full sponsorship of his medical treatment and related costs.
According to a post from Rafik Mahama, an aide to Ibrahim Mahama, arrangements were made to transport Awuche to the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, 8 July 2026, where he arrived safely and began the required medical procedures.
Despite the physical challenges associated with his condition, including difficulty obtaining suitable clothing and footwear, Awuche maintained a modest lifestyle. He completed his education and later worked as a farmer and mechanic before his death.
