Ghana’s two leading dancehall artistes have traded fresh jabs, reviving one of the industry’s most persistent feuds.
In a recent appearance on the Nigerian podcast The Honest Bunch, Shatta Wale described an early camaraderie with Stonebwoy that he said later soured.
According to Shatta Wale, the relationship shifted once Stonebwoy gained media attention and external voices began influencing him negatively.
“Stonebwoy is my boy. Stonebwoy used to be with me. He used to come to my first room I rented. He used to call me daddy,” he said. “But when he started getting into the media and, people started telling him…you know you have talent. You’re even better than Shatta Wale,” he added.
When asked whether he would welcome Stonebwoy in the studio, Shatta Wale insisted he harboured no personal grudge against his colleague.
“I’m cool, but you know, he can’t watch me. He’ll fall down. My spirit is too big for him,” he said, adding that his own confidence left little room for pretence.
Labelling Stonebwoy as the fake type, Shatta Wale drew a contrast in their approaches to conflict, claiming he followed through on threats while suggesting Stonebwoy could not.
“He doesn’t follow things he say, but I follow through with things I say. When we say we are coming to beat you, we are coming to beat you, We are not coming to play there and coming to ask you, what is your name. He knows me well like that,” he stated.
Stonebwoy responded the same day on X, pointing to a recent public encounter between the two.
“The last time you saw me, you hugged me like an obsessed woman. Aren’t you tired of lying?” he wrote.
The exchange has once again drawn attention to a rivalry that began in Ghana’s music industry around 2014 and reached a violent peak at the 2019 Ghana Music Awards, where a chaotic brawl involving reports of guns forced the event’s disruption. Multiple subsequent attempts at reconciliation have failed to end the tensions.
