Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, on Thursday, April 18, said plans were underway to reunite Naa Okromo with her parents.
This decision, she explained during a press conference, was made following guidance from the Attorney-General’s office, while a thorough review of the case continues.
Newman indicated that Naa Okromo’s mother has pledged to uphold all children’s rights laws by signing a bond and confirmed that Naa Okromo will resume her education, under her parents’ care.
“The Attorney General’s interim report, dated April 18, 2024, advises that in the best interest of the child and in accordance with Sections (2) and (5) of the Children’s Act, Naa Okromo should be reunited with her parents while they conduct a thorough review of the case,” she stated
During the press briefing, the Minister-Designate also revealed that medical examinations conducted on the child confirmed that she is “intact” and not pregnant. The counselling unit of the ministry has also provided support and guidance, she added
“The medical assessment of the child indicates that she is not pregnant and she has no immediate health concerns. Naa Okromo’s date of birth on records from the creche she attended indicates that she is 15 years old, and she was born on 18th July 2008,” she added.
The family and the Nungua Traditional Council confirmed Naa Okromo’s safe arrival on Thursday evening.
Naa Okromo became a topic of national discussion after pictures of her alleged customary marriage rites with the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, emerged online.
According to reports from the Nungua Traditional Council, the marriage was merely customary.
In response to the situation, the Information Ministry stated on Friday, April 5, stressing that Naa Okromo has been under the care of both the gender and chieftaincy ministries since the police intervened to ensure her safety.
