Ghana’s 9th Parliament officially began today, January 7, 2024, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assuming a dominant majority (183 seats) over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) (88 seats).
Rtd Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin was also sworn in as the Speaker for a second term, a feat he described as “a rare honour.”
Adding to the NDC’s numbers, four independent MPs – including Worlasi Kpeli (Afram Plains North) and Ohene Kwame Frimpong (Asante Akim North) – have aligned with the party, granting them a decisive two-thirds majority.
This unprecedented majority paves the way for the NDC to drive key policy initiatives and implement transformative legislative changes with greater ease.
