In a country where the art of filmmaking and, sometimes, music videos has been dominated by human characters, POKA Studios, a powerhouse of 2D (two-dimensional) animation videos, is breaking the mold with its latest thriller, “Last Night.”
The studio, known for creating animated visualizers that bring Ghanaian and Nigerian hit songs and sometimes viral internet moments to life, shifts to tell a brief yet emotive story about the unspoken culture of unfaithfulness among Ghanaian men.
“Last night” centers on a married chap who meets a charming lady in a restaurant, sitting by herself on a rainy night. Smitten by her elegance and beauty, “the sharp guy” in him easily chats the lady up and drives her to her house to “do the do.” But everything that comes easy usually doesn’t end well, he wakes up to an empty room with confusing clues that lead him to a sinister creature lurking in the dark. Now regretting the decision he made last night, the young man is forced to fight for survival against this towering man-like ghoul.

Apart from telling the story of the consequences of unfaithfulness and one-night stands, the crisp visuals and fluid motion of the animation make “Last Night” an enticing watch, especially compared to other tacky flicks in Ghana.
“Last Night” is directed, written and animated by Peter Oti Asamoah, produced by Edwin Donkor, and features music by Ivan Offei-Danquah.
