Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series Coming to Netflix

After five years of delay and anticipation, Netflix has greenlit a live-action series based on the popular Assassin’s Creed video game franchise.

The announcement falls in line with Netflix’s venture of developing film projects for blockbuster video games, following the spiked ratings and commercial success of live adaptations, including The Witcher” and “Arcane”. In collaboration with the developers of the game (Ubisoft), Netflix’s film adaptation will interpolate the storyline of the video games, where there’s a long-standing feud between the totalitarian Templars and the hooded brotherhood of dangerous assassins, who are fighting for freedom, unfolding through sequences of historical events.

Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, The Killing)  have been announced as the showrunners and executive producers. Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill from Ubisoft Film & Television will also serve as executive producers on the Assassin’s Creed series.

The streaming giants, who first announced that a series for the franchise was in the works in 2020, have not disclosed a release date for the forthcoming action-packed and espionage-filled series.

The Assassin’s Creed video games have 14 installments, with a stand-alone live-action film released in 2016, an animated series (Assassin’s Creed: Ascendance), and other short films exploring the lineage of the hooded ancient assassins.
