No Oscars for AI: Academy Bars AI-Generated Actors and Writers from Awards

In new eligibility rules released on Friday, May 1, 2026, the Academy drew a clear boundary on the use of artificial intelligence in award-contending films. Only performances by real human actors and scripts written by humans will be considered for competition.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has declared that AI-generated actors and screenplays are ineligible for Oscars.

In new eligibility rules released on Friday, May 1, 2026, the Academy drew a clear boundary on the use of artificial intelligence in award-contending films. Only performances by real human actors and scripts written by humans will be considered for competition.

“In the Acting category, only roles credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent will be considered eligible,” the Academy stated. “In the Writing categories, screenplays must be human-authored to qualify.”

The Academy clarified that it is not banning AI tools completely. Filmmakers may still use artificial intelligence during production or special effects, however any fully synthetic performance or script will be disqualified. The organization also gave itself the authority to request detailed disclosures about AI usage in submitted projects.

Other Notable Changes

In a separate update, actors can now earn multiple nominations in the same category, provided both performances receive enough votes to rank in the top five. This adjustment brings the acting categories in line with directing, writing, and other fields.

The Academy also introduced adjustments to International Feature Film, cinematography, and casting rules. All changes will apply to films released between January 1 and December 31, 2026. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for early 2027.

The decision arrives at a time when Hollywood is actively debating the rapid rise of AI and its potential impact on creative professions. With this move, the Academy is reinforcing its position that the Oscars should celebrate authentic human creativity and performance.
