Suhum MCE Assures Turf Contractor of Release of MP’s Common Fund

She described the turf as an important development for Suhum because of its location and its potential to provide young people with a suitable environment for football and talent development.

The Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, Lydia Ohenewaa has assured the contractor for the new artificial turf at the Suhum Anglican Park that funds allocated from the MP’s Common Fund will be released as and when they are disbursed through the appropriate government channels.

The assurance is intended to ensure that the flow of funds does not delay construction, with the contractor, George Afriyie, targeting December for completion of PHASE 1 of the project.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Monday, August 17, 2026, Mrs Ohenewaa said the Municipal Assembly would facilitate the release of funds to the contractor whenever the required disbursements were received.

“We are assuring the contractor that because of steady disbursement by the president every quarter, we will disburse the funds as and when you request for the funds,” she said.

The funding for the project is being drawn from the Common Fund allocation of the Suhum MP, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, and is expected to be channelled through the Assembly and the Coordinating Council for execution.

Mr Bekoe disclosed that the project had initially been expected to receive support from Ghana Gas, but after the company was unable to sign the required contract, he turned to his Common Fund and other resources to get the project underway.

Mrs Ohenewaa’s role in the project therefore centres on facilitating the release and application of the funds through the Assembly’s administrative structures rather than providing a separate source of financing for the facility.

She described the turf as an important development for Suhum because of its location and its potential to provide young people with a suitable environment for football and talent development.

“This project is a project on the heart of the town,” she said, adding that the facility would allow the youth and the wider community to enjoy football in a better environment.

The contractor said the first phase would involve preparation of the playing grounds, installation of floodlights and construction of wire fencing. He said he was hopeful of meeting the December deadline if funding continued to be released steadily.

The project is expected to provide Suhum with a modern sporting facility while creating an avenue for young people to develop their football talents.
