The New York Times Magazine has highlighted hip-hop’s growing influence on American music by including several of its biggest stars in its new list, “The 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters.”

Released on April 27, 2026, the unranked list was compiled from input by more than 250 music industry insiders, songwriters, producers,  plus six New York Times critics. The list celebrates artistes who have shaped contemporary music through strong lyricism, melody, storytelling, structure, and emotional depth across genres.

Among the hip-hop figures recognized are Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Young Thug, Missy Elliott, and the rap group, OutKast. Their selection marks a notable expansion of the traditional American songwriter canon, which has long been dominated by rock, folk, country, and pop artistes.

Jay-Z is praised for his sharp wordplay, vivid storytelling, and precise delivery, from his 1996 debut “Reasonable Doubt” through his long career. Kendrick Lamar stands out for his intricate narratives, conceptual hits, and socially conscious lyricism. Young Thug is recognized for his experimental melodies and distinctive style of rap. Missy Elliott earns acclaim for her inventive production, playful yet clever wordplay, and genre-blending style. OutKast brought Southern swagger, eccentric storytelling, and bold experimentation that influenced many artistes who followed.

Though the list is heavily populated by singers such as Taylor Swift, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, amongst others, the inclusion of these rappers is significant. It reflects hip-hop’s rise from a street genre to a dominant cultural force that has reshaped rhythm, rhyme, and narrative in American music.

In accompanying interviews, collaborators praised these artistes for expanding the very definition of song writing in the 21st century. With this list, The New York Times Magazine is effectively updating the Great American Songbook for a more diverse, rhythm-driven era.
