The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of popular actor Alexx Ekubo.

The 40-year-old passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, after a prolonged battle with liver cancer. News of his demise first broke on social media when his colleague, actor Godwin Nnadiekwe, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram.

“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alexx Ekubo,” Nnadiekwe wrote. “To think you already prepared your will, it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”

Ekubo had been absent from the spotlight since late 2024, shortly after reports of his marriage breakdown surfaced. His sudden disappearance from social media and film projects sparked widespread concern among fans, many of whom feared he was battling depression.

With a career spanning over two decades and more than 100 film credits, Ekubo was best known for his charismatic screen presence and versatility in both romantic comedies and heartfelt dramas. He gained wider recognition after finishing as first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant.

He made his acting debut with a minor role in the 2003 film Sinners in the House and later starred in several notable movies, including Afamefuna, Power of 1, A Sunday Affair, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, Catch.er, Zero Hour, The First Lady, Lagos Cougars, and Weekend Getaway.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the Nollywood community, with many remembering Ekubo as a talented and a kind hearted character both on and off screen.
